Three Saffron Walden air cadets are on cloud nine, after successfully passing the Air Training Corps' Gliding Induction Course at 614 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS) based at MDPGA Wethersfield.

Cadets (CDT) Smith (16), Emuss (13) and Corporal Braybrooke (17) all flew with instructors, and demonstrated that they could handle the Air Cadet’s Viking glider to a sufficient standard to be award their Gliding induction certificates.  

Cdt Smith said after she landed from her flight “This was the first time I had been gliding, and although I was a bit daunted by the prospect to begin with, it turned out to be a fantastic experience which I really enjoyed and that I can’t wait to repeat at the next opportunity that I get."

Cpl Braybrooke said “This was my second time gliding and the experience is still as fantastic and exciting as the first. As well as completing my Gliding Induction Course I managed to do some aerobatics. They were amazing and I will be sure to go back and do my gliding scholarship”

Both Cadet Smith and Cpl Braybrooke showed that much promise, the instructors have recommended that they apply for their Gliding Scholarship (GS).  This will allow the cadets to return to 614 VGS where they will be trained required standard to allow them to fly the Viking glider solo. Saffron Walden Squadron, which has its HQ on Herbert’s Farm Playing fields, is actively recruiting cadets and more adult volunteers.
